Goat Transhumance Festival
The Ancient Transhumance Tradition in Val Rendena
The Goat Transhumance Festival (Desmontegada delle Capre) is one of the most authentic and evocative cultural events in Val Rendena. On 29 August, hundreds of goats adorned with flowers and cowbells descend from the summer alpine pastures to the valley floor, accompanied by shepherds in a picturesque procession through the valley's villages. A centuries-old tradition celebrating the end of the alpine summer and the return of the animals to their stables.
A Ritual That Tells the Valley's Story
The word "desmontegada" (or desmontegar in Trentino dialect) literally means "coming down from the mountain" and refers to the moment when livestock leaves the high pastures after the summer months. In Val Rendena, this practice has ancient roots and is linked to the famous Bionda dell'Adamello goat, a native breed that for centuries was a vital resource for the farming families of the valley.
The Day's Programme
The festival features a rich programme involving the whole community:
- Goat parade: the procession passes through village streets with festively decorated animals
- Local produce market: goat cheeses, cured meats, honey and alpine pasture products
- Artisan demonstrations: milk processing, shearing and traditional crafts
- Music and folklore: traditional groups and mountain songs
- Tastings: typical dishes made with Val Rendena goat products
The Goat Transhumance Festival is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in alpine rural culture and understand the deep bond between people and mountains that has always characterised Val Rendena. An event combining tradition, gastronomy and the beauty of a timeless landscape.
