The Assumption, Heart of the Villa Rendena Community

The Parish of Santa Maria Assunta in Villa Rendena is the village's main church, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. The dedication to Santa Maria Assunta is among the most widespread in Trentino parishes, expressing the deep Marian devotion that permeates the spirituality of these Alpine communities since the evangelisation by Saint Vigilius in the 4th century.

The parish church, with its bell tower marking the hours of village life, is the centre of religious life in Villa Rendena. The building forms part of the extraordinarily rich sacred heritage of Val Rendena, one of the Trentino valleys densest in frescoed churches, featuring the masterpieces of the Baschenis painters, the itinerant Bergamo artist family whose Dance of Death and sacred cycles made this valley an open-air museum of Alpine Renaissance art.
