San Leonardo, the Saint of Prisoners in Vigo Rendena

The Parish of San Leonardo – Maso Colombin in Vigo Rendena is dedicated to Saint Leonard of Noblac, patron saint of prisoners and freed slaves, whose cult spread widely through medieval Europe and the Alpine valleys. Its location at Maso Colombin tells of the deep bond between rural life and the religious dimension typical of Val Rendena communities.

Vigo Rendena, a small village in lower Val Rendena, preserves the identity of an Alpine hamlet where the parish church has always been the centre of community life. The valley, evangelised in the 4th century by Saint Vigilius, holds a heritage of sacred art enriched by the Baschenis painters tradition, whose Renaissance frescoes adorn numerous local churches.
