Description
San Vigilio, the Martyr Saint of Val Rendena in Spiazzo
The Parish Church of San Vigilio in Spiazzo is dedicated to the patron saint of Trentino, Bishop Saint Vigilius, who in the 4th century brought Christianity to the Alpine valleys and suffered martyrdom in Val Rendena itself. The dedication to Saint Vigilius gives this church particularly deep significance, as Spiazzo lies in the heart of the valley where the saint carried out his final mission.
The parish building, with its Trentino-Lombard architecture and bell tower dominating the village, is the centre of religious life in Spiazzo. Val Rendena, which guards the memory of Saint Vigilius's martyrdom, is also the land of the Baschenis painters, whose Renaissance frescoes adorn numerous local churches.
