Description
The Ancient Church of San Giorgio, Guardian of Medieval Memories
The old Church of San Giorgio in Comano Terme is one of the territory's oldest sacred buildings, dedicated to the knight saint and dragon-slayer, a heroic figure very popular in medieval Alpine devotion. The designation "vecchia" (old) indicates its antiquity compared to more recent places of worship, giving it particular charm.
The building, with its essential architecture telling centuries of history, may preserve traces of frescoes and decorations typical of the Giudicarie valley churches. Saint George, patron of knights and soldiers, was a saint particularly venerated in the mountain communities of Trentino, a land evangelised in the 4th century by Saint Vigilius.
