San Brizio, the Gallic Bishop Saint Venerated in Tione

The Church of San Brizio in Tione di Trento is dedicated to Saint Brictius, Bishop of Tours and successor of the great Saint Martin, whose cult spread through the Alpine valleys along ancient transalpine communication routes. The dedication to this Gallic saint testifies to the deep cultural and religious bonds between Trentino communities and the Franco-Germanic world.

The sacred building forms part of the rich religious panorama of the Giudicarie, of which Tione is the main centre. The area preserves a heritage of sacred art spanning from the earliest ages to the famous fresco cycles of the Baschenis, the Bergamo family of painters who worked in the Trentino valleys between the 15th and 16th centuries.
